Provided technical direction for a diverse portfolio of ERP modernisation strategy websites across ASP.NET, PHP, and WordPress establishing a structured migration strategy balancing innovation with operational continuity. Defined architectural standards, selected modern Java frameworks, and designed a modular system absorbing features from legacy sites without disrupting operations.
A major part involved rewriting and re-architecting legacy codebases into clean Java services meeting modern security standards, improved performance, and seamless new-platform integration. Java's OOP foundation enabled a modular, reusable component architecture changes to a business rule, UI component, or data model propagated automatically across all dependent areas. This architectural discipline accelerated feature development since enhancements could be introduced once and leveraged everywhere.
The strategy of running old and new platforms in parallel - often called the Strangler Fig pattern - was essential for risk management. Rather than a single "big bang" migration cutover, we migrated functionality piece by piece. New features went exclusively to the Java platform; legacy features were migrated when their traffic patterns allowed safe cutover. After 18 months, the legacy platforms were serving less than 5% of traffic and could be decommissioned with minimal risk.
The data migration was the most dangerous phase. Customer accounts, order histories, and product catalogs had to move from three different database transaction patterns schemas (Oracle, MySQL, and a WordPress database transaction patterns) into a single normalized Oracle schema on the new platform. We built automated migration scripts that ran nightly, reconciling differences. Migration ran in parallel for 90 days before cutover - by migration day, the new database had 99.97% of the data. The remaining 0.03% were edge cases resolved manually over the first week.
The performance gains from migration exceeded expectations. The old ASP.NET stack on shared hosting averaged 3.2 second page loads. The Java platform on dedicated hardware averaged 0.8 seconds. But the architectural change mattered more than the technology: the old system queried the database transaction patterns on every page load with no distributed caching patterns. The new system used tiered distributed caching patterns - Redis for session data and popular products, query-level caching for product catalogs. database transaction patterns load dropped 70% while serving 40% more traffic.
