Led end-to-end strategy and development of multiple mobile applications for DVRs, NVRs, and IP cameras supporting millions of downloads across iOS and Android. Designed scalable architecture for real-time video streaming with optimized buffering, codec selection, and adaptive streaming.

Established a unified integration framework accommodating different firmware versions, device capabilities, and vendor protocols including seamless remote firmware upgrades. Designed clean, intuitive interfaces for live feeds, PTZ controls, event-based playback, and alert management. Advanced features like video synopsis condensed hours of footage into short activity-based summaries. Published on the Apple App Store.

The streaming reliability challenge was enormous. Users expected live video on 3G networks in remote warehouse locations, hotel WiFi, and across international cellular connections - environments with 200-2000ms latency and variable bandwidth. Adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR) was essential but naive implementations caused constant quality fluctuations users found jarring. We implemented hysteresis in bitrate decisions: upgrade aggressively when bandwidth improves but downgrade conservatively, only when buffer drops below 3 seconds. This reduced the visual "stuttering" experience from every-15-seconds to rare.

Device fragmentation across DVR firmware versions was the hidden complexity. A single "Lorex DVR" could have any of 40+ firmware versions, each with slightly different RTSP authentication methods, stream URL formats, and PTZ command sets. We built a device fingerprinting layer that detected firmware version at connection time and selected the appropriate protocol adapter. Adding a new firmware variant required adding an adapter class rather than modifying core streaming logic. This abstraction saved hundreds of hours annually as we onboarded new hardware generations.

Battery optimization for 24/7 production monitoring strategy use cases required rethinking every background operation. The app needed to send motion alerts even when backgrounded but couldn't keep persistent TCP connections open - iOS would terminate them. We implemented push-via-webhook: cameras sent motion events to our cloud backend, which triggered APNs push notifications with enough context for the app to display an actionable alert without a network request. Background battery consumption dropped from 8% per hour (always-on TCP) to under 0.5% per hour.
