Wireframing & Prototyping

Wireframing and prototyping transform design ideas into testable artifacts before a single line of code is written saving time and cost by catching problems early.

1Wireframe Fidelity Levels

    Low-Fidelity (Lo-Fi)
  • Rough sketches on paper or simple boxes in Figma
  • Focus on layout and flow, not visual design
  • Used in early ideation with stakeholders
  • Quick to create, easy to discard and iterate
    Mid-Fidelity
  • More accurate layout, placeholder content
  • Shows component placement, hierarchy, spacing
  • Good for team alignment before high-fidelity work
    High-Fidelity (Hi-Fi)
  • Pixel-accurate, production-ready designs
  • Realistic content, colors, typography, imagery
  • Used for usability testing and developer handoff
  • Created in Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD

2Prototyping Techniques

Paper Prototyping Fastest way to test ideas. Draw screens on paper, simulate interactions manually.

Clickable Wireframes Link wireframe screens in Figma or InVision to simulate navigation. Tests flow without visual design investment.

Interactive Prototypes Figma prototypes with transitions, overlays, and hover states. Used for usability testing.

Coded Prototypes HTML/CSS/JS prototypes for complex interactions. More accurate but more expensive to build.

Wizard of Oz Human manually simulates the system behind the scenes while users interact. Tests AI or complex system interactions without building the backend.

3Prototyping in Figma

code
Figma Prototype Workflow:
1. Design all screens as separate frames
2. Select element → click Prototype tab
3. Drag connector to destination frame
4. Set trigger: On Click, On Hover, After Delay
5. Set animation: Instant, Dissolve, Smart Animate
6. Share prototype link for testing
    Key prototype interactions:
  • Page navigation (On Click → Navigate to)
  • Modal/overlay (On Click → Open overlay)
  • Scroll behavior (Vertical / Horizontal)
  • Component state transitions (variants)
  • ```
