Usability Testing
Usability testing validates design decisions by observing real users attempting real tasks. It reveals the gap between designer intent and actual user experience.

1Testing Methods
Moderated In-Person Facilitator guides participant through tasks, can probe for reasoning. Richest qualitative data but time-intensive.
Moderated Remote Same via video call (Zoom, Teams). Enables broader geographic reach.
Unmoderated Remote Participants complete tasks independently using tools like Maze, UserZoom, or UserTesting.
5-Second Test Show design for 5 seconds, ask what they remember. Tests first impressions.
A/B Testing Show different design variants to different user segments. Measure conversion or completion rate.
Tree Testing Test information architecture in isolation. Users find items in a text-only tree to reveal navigation issues.
Card Sorting Users group content cards to reveal mental models for navigation and categories.
2Running a Usability Test
- 1. Plan
- Define research questions: "Can users find the checkout button?"
- Recruit 5-8 participants (Nielsen: 5 users find 85% of problems)
- Write task scenarios in user language
- 2. Facilitate
- Welcome and comfort the participant
- "Think aloud" instruction: narrate what you're doing
- Avoid leading questions: "What would you do next?" not "Would you click there?"
- Note hesitations, errors, and verbal comments
- 3. Analyze
- Affinity map findings across participants
- Rate severity: critical (blocks task) / serious / minor
- Identify patterns across 3+ participants
- 4. Prioritize & Fix
- Severity × frequency = priority
- Quick wins vs systemic redesign
- Retest after changes
