QA in Software Development
Quality Assurance (QA) is the systematic process of verifying that software meets requirements and functions correctly. Effective QA catches bugs early, reduces costs, and improves user experience.
Contents 3 Sections
1Testing Types
- Functional Testing
Verify that software functions work as designed. Test inputs → outputs.
- Unit tests: individual functions/methods
- Integration tests: components working together
- System tests: entire application
- UAT: business stakeholders validate requirements
- Non-Functional Testing
Test quality attributes beyond functionality.
- Performance testing: response time under load
- Security testing: vulnerability identification
- Usability testing: user experience
- Accessibility testing: usability for disabled users
- Compatibility testing: different browsers/devices
- Regression Testing
Ensure new changes don't break existing functionality.
- Re-run previous test cases after changes
- Automated regression suites critical for CI/CD
- High coverage = confidence in deployments
- Smoke Testing
Quick test that critical features work before deeper testing.
- "If it smokes, don't test further"
- Catch blockers early in testing cycle
- Fast feedback loop for developers
2Test Design Techniques
- Boundary Value Analysis
Test edge cases where values change behavior.
- Valid range: 1-100 → test 0, 1, 50, 100, 101
- Date fields: test start date, end date, invalid dates
- String lengths: test empty, max length, over max
- Equivalence Partitioning
Divide inputs into groups where behavior is the same.
- Age: 0-17 (child), 18-64 (adult), 65+ (senior)
- Test one value from each partition
- Reduces test cases while maintaining coverage
- State Transition Testing
Test valid and invalid state transitions.
- Order states: Pending → Processing → Shipped → Delivered
- Test valid transitions (Pending → Processing)
- Test invalid transitions (Pending → Delivered)
- Decision Table Testing
Test combinations of conditions and their outcomes.
- Discount logic: if (age < 18 AND student) → 15% discount
- Create table of all condition combinations
- Test each combination
3QA Process & Metrics
Test Execution Process 1. Prepare test environment (data, tools, access) 2. Execute test cases step-by-step 3. Document results (pass/fail) 4. Report bugs with reproduction steps 5. Verify bug fixes 6. Sign-off on release
- Key QA Metrics
- Test Coverage: % of features tested
- Defect Density: bugs per 1000 lines of code
- Test Pass Rate: % of tests passing
- Defects Found vs Escaped: bugs caught vs missed
- Test Efficiency: bugs found per test case
- Mean Time to Failure (MTBF)
- Bug Severity & Priority
- Critical: app crash, data loss, security breach
- High: major feature broken
- Medium: minor feature issue
- Low: cosmetic, documentation error
- Release Readiness
- All critical/high bugs fixed
- Test coverage > 80%
- No open blockers
- Sign-off from QA lead
