The Problem Statement
The core problem necessitating this comprehensive redesign was the critical misalignment between the advanced physical hardware manufactured by the company and the outdated, fragmented digital interfaces used to control and monitor that hardware. As marine electronics have evolved to become highly sophisticated, data rich systems, the software required to manage them must be equally advanced, intuitive, and reliable. However, the legacy software ecosystem was characterized by a disjointed architecture that forced users to navigate through complex, non intuitive menus to access basic functionalities. This poor user experience was particularly detrimental in the maritime context, where operators often face high stress situations, adverse weather conditions, and the need to make rapid decisions based on accurate data. The lack of a cohesive mobile strategy meant that users were tethered to the physical displays on their vessels, unable to effectively monitor their boats remotely or perform pre trip planning from their personal devices. Furthermore, the legacy systems completely lacked modern artificial intelligence integration, missing crucial opportunities to provide predictive insights, automate routine tasks, and enhance overall safety. The onboarding process was another major pain point, characterized by steep learning curves and technical jargon that alienated less experienced boaters and generated a high volume of costly support inquiries. Accessibility was also severely compromised in the old design, with low contrast interfaces and small touch targets making the system difficult to use in bright sunlight or rough seas. In essence, the software was acting as a barrier rather than an enabler, preventing users from fully realizing the value of their premium hardware investments. The organization urgently needed to resolve these systemic usability and architectural issues to prevent customer churn, defend their market share against aggressive, digitally native competitors, and establish a robust platform capable of supporting the next generation of connected marine technologies.
Methodology & Research
The research and methodology phase of this project was foundational to ensuring that the final design solutions were deeply rooted in the actual needs, behaviors, and environmental constraints of maritime users. The team employed a rigorous, multi method approach to gather qualitative and quantitative data, starting with an extensive review of the existing digital estate and competitive landscape. As highlighted in the [Raymarine Digital Transformation Case Study](https://www.brandpotential.com/work/transforming-raymarine-into-electronics-leader), the brand was dealing with a patchwork of standalone, static HTML sites that were poorly aligned with modern customer journeys, while competitors like Garmin and Navico were capturing online mindshare with mobile optimized platforms. To understand the specific pain points of the end users, the research team conducted over forty in depth user interviews with a diverse cross section of the customer base, including professional captains, tournament anglers, and recreational sailors. These interviews were supplemented by contextual inquiry sessions, where researchers observed users interacting with the legacy systems in their natural environment aboard various vessels. This observational research was critical for identifying environmental factors that impact usability, such as glare, physical instability, and the need for rapid information retrieval. The team also investigated the potential for advanced technology integration, referencing academic insights such as those found in [Envisioning AI for international cooperation in maritime ...](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2590198225004981), which notes that artificial intelligence integration allows for dynamic, adaptive assessment of connectivity and accessibility, improving data quality and resilience. This insight drove the strategy for incorporating predictive maintenance and intelligent routing features into the new platform. Furthermore, the team conducted comprehensive accessibility audits of the existing interfaces, utilizing industry standard guidelines to identify areas where contrast, typography, and interaction design fell short of requirements for marine environments. The synthesis of this extensive research provided a clear, data driven roadmap for the redesign, ensuring that every design decision was justified by empirical evidence and directly addressed the documented needs of the user base. This meticulous methodology mitigated project risks and guaranteed that the final product would deliver a truly transformative user experience.
The Approach
The approach to executing this complex redesign was highly collaborative, iterative, and deeply integrated with the internal engineering and product management teams of the client. Recognizing the scale and technical complexity of the project, the design team adopted an agile methodology, breaking the work down into manageable sprints focused on specific user journeys and functional modules. The process began with the creation of detailed user personas and journey maps, which served as the guiding artifacts for all subsequent design activities. Utilizing Figma as the primary design and prototyping tool, the team rapidly generated low fidelity wireframes to explore different layout concepts and navigational structures for the dashboard and mobile application. These early concepts were subjected to rigorous internal reviews and preliminary usability testing with select user groups to validate the core architectural decisions before committing to high fidelity design. As the designs progressed, the team placed a strong emphasis on creating a comprehensive, scalable design system. This system defined all visual elements, typography, iconography, and interaction patterns, ensuring absolute consistency across the Software as a Service platform and the RayConnect mobile application. Project Overview
Led the redesign of Raymarine's overall SaaS platform including dashboard, company pages, and onboarding pages. Added new system features connected with AI technology and users' needs. Directed the full UX redesign of the RayConnect mobile app supporting chart management, purchasing, and download flows for marine navigation.
Raymarine's users are experienced mariners people who navigate serious offshore voyages and depend on their electronics for safety. The UX standard was higher than typical consumer electronics: errors don't just cause frustration, they can create dangerous situations at sea. Every design decision carried a safety dimension.
Research with professional captains and serious recreational sailors revealed that the existing platform prioritized feature richness over workflow clarity. Raymarine's engineers had added features for years without cleaning up the underlying IA. I led a full IA restructuring based on how mariners actually work trip planning, departure preparation, underway monitoring, and post-voyage rather than how Raymarine organized its product line.
The biggest insight from user research was that marine electronics users interact with their devices under difficult conditions: bright sunlight, wet hands, moving vessel, divided attention between the water and the screen. Every interaction needed to be executable in under 3 taps, with immediate feedback, and forgiving of fat-finger errors. We introduced a maritime-optimized touch target standard (60×60pt minimum vs industry-standard 44×44pt) and tested all designs in simulated sunlight and wet-hand conditions.
