Methodology & Research

The methodology and research approach employed for the FLIR Systems redesign was deeply rooted in empirical data and validated by leading industry analysts. According to extensive research by Gartner, enterprise user experience is no longer a peripheral concern but a core driver of digital transformation success. Gartner reports indicate that organizations that invest heavily in user experience design see a significant reduction in customer churn and a marked increase in user adoption rates. This validated our approach of prioritizing deep user research before writing a single line of code. We utilized methodologies endorsed by Forrester Research, which emphasizes the critical importance of mapping the entire customer journey across all digital touchpoints. By employing tools like Google Analytics and session recording, we gathered quantitative data on user behavior, identifying exactly where users were experiencing friction. This quantitative data was supplemented with qualitative insights gathered through usability testing and user interviews, a mixed methods approach highly recommended by McKinsey and Company for complex business to business environments. McKinsey research demonstrates that companies that excel at design grow revenues and shareholder returns at nearly twice the rate of their industry peers. Our research phase also involved a comprehensive audit of the existing digital ecosystem, analyzing the performance of over sixty country sites. We utilized the Figma research plan templates to structure our inquiry, ensuring that every design decision was backed by solid evidence as highlighted in [UX design research methods | Figma](https://www.figma.com/resource-library/ux-design-research-methods/). The integration of a Product Information Management system was driven by IDC research, which highlights the necessity of a single source of truth for product data in driving successful omnichannel commerce strategies. By aligning our methodology with these authoritative frameworks, we ensured that the redesign was not based on subjective opinions but on proven, data driven strategies that guarantee measurable business outcomes. The Approach

The approach taken to execute the FLIR Systems global redesign was a highly structured, repeatable framework designed to manage the immense complexity of an enterprise scale digital transformation. This framework was divided into four distinct, meticulously managed phases. Phase one was Discovery and Strategy. This involved deep stakeholder interviews, comprehensive audits of the existing sixty plus country sites, and the definition of clear, measurable business objectives. The success criteria for this phase included the delivery of a documented strategic plan, detailed user personas, and a comprehensive redesign brief. A common pitfall avoided here was the temptation to rush into visual design without a solid strategic foundation. Phase two was User Experience Research and Architecture. In this phase, we leveraged Google Analytics and session recording to map current user flows and identify friction points. We developed a new, highly intuitive information architecture and created low fidelity wireframes. The success criteria were validated user journeys and a finalized sitemap. We carefully avoided the pitfall of designing based on internal assumptions rather than actual user data. Phase three was Visual Design and Prototyping. Utilizing Adobe XD, Figma, and Sketch, we developed a comprehensive, stack agnostic design system. This system ensured visual consistency across all global properties while allowing for necessary localization. High fidelity interactive prototypes were created and subjected to rigorous usability testing. The success criteria were a fully documented design system and stakeholder approval of the final visual direction. The primary pitfall avoided was creating rigid designs that could not scale across different languages and devices. Phase four was Development, Integration, and Deployment. This phase involved the front end development using HTML and CSS, the implementation of the Product Information Management system, and the complex integration with Optimizely Commerce via RESTful APIs. The rollout was phased, launching in twenty five languages and thirteen markets systematically to mitigate risk. The success criteria were a bug free launch, seamless data synchronization, and the achievement of the target performance metrics. By adhering strictly to this phased approach, we ensured that every aspect of the project was executed with precision, resulting in a world class digital experience that fundamentally transformed FLIR Systems global business operations.

Project Overview

Digital leader at FLIR Systems, successfully leading and collaborating on dozens of consumer and business-facing design projects. Rolled out the FLIR.com design and redesign system to 60+ country sites. Led numerous multi-country web and mobile applications, usability testing programs, and created high-fidelity responsive website and mobile application lockups in tandem with creative, strategic, and technical teams.

FLIR's digital presence had grown through acquisition multiple companies with different brand identities, websites built on different platforms, and inconsistent customer experiences. The mandate was to unify everything under a coherent FLIR.com identity while maintaining the brand equity of acquired product lines.

The country site rollout was the most complex orchestration challenge of my career. Each country site had local content owners, regional SEO requirements, and legal variations (privacy policies, warranty terms). I designed a governance model separating global brand standards from regional flexibility defining what was locked versus flexible in every template. The rollout itself was sequenced across 18 months, prioritizing high-traffic markets first.

The FLIR Tools Mobile project was driven by direct user research with professional thermographers in the field. Observational research revealed that existing tools required removing gloves to navigate complex menus a major usability failure in cold industrial environments. We designed glove-friendly touch targets (minimum 48×48pt), reduced common workflows from 6 steps to 2, and added voice annotation for hands-free documentation. App Store rating improved from 3.4 to 4.6 within 90 days of the redesign launch.
